about

WUP UND WUF is the result of a 4 years’ iterative composition work designed to reveal the hidden frequencies of natural sounds, with no emotional intent.

The 1st iteration, or “Analytic Phase”, saw the recording of 8 moments of wind and sea noises. Each moment was split into 4 frequencies ranges, i.e. low (0 - 200 Hz), low - mid (200 - 2000 Hz), mid - high (2000 - 10000 Hz) and high (10000 - 20000 Hz), thus covering the whole human hearing range.

Each segment underwent several DSP alterations to boost unheard frequencies and generate unexpected rhythmic patterns. The segments were then rearranged on a time frame of 4 to 8 minutes to provide drama and energy. This first generation of tracks is named after the moment they were recorded at, using a 4-letter system. These are tracks 09 to 16 of digital release.

The 2nd composition iteration, or "Organic Phase", saw the latching of each track with a drum machine at 120 BPM. Each drum pattern element sample is designed to match the original track sound and forms the base for live improvisations. After multiple passes over a period of 2 months, some patterns emerged and were recorded as separate 16 bars segments.

These elements form the base of the 3rd composition iteration, or "Combinatory Phase". Here, the original segments and rhythm patterns were re-organised to build repetition, tension and release. Some segments were eliminated, shortened or shifted to make space for the drum patterns, and vice versa. The resulting tracks carry the original name with the "GRRR” append. In this release, these tracks are numbered from 01 to 08.

The digital manipulations of this process transform the original material beyond immediate recognition. Therefore, WUP UND WUF cannot be described as “Musique Concrète”, but a combination of elemental oscillations with digital transformation.

WUP UND WUF can feel disconcerting or mindless. And that is fine: after all, nature element noises do not have a purpose. These sounds just happen and we process them as long we can perceive them: it is only our human cognitive nature that invites us to try and find a meaning in every noise, as a result of our evolutionary survival neurological system.

WUP UND WUF is a blip against the need to comprehend all things: there is no emotional intent in WUP UND WUF. It just happens and lets every listener flirt with void and rhythms.
